As of 2024, the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency has given notice of an upcoming mandatory order for all birdkeepers located in affected areas to follow strict biosecurity and housing measures.

These measures include, among other stipulations, the need for Spike and his flock to be housed in an enclosure at all times from December 23rd, 2024.

Previous Avian Flu outbreaks have placed birds in lockdown for several months. It is devastating to know they won't be able to exhibit natural behaviour outdoors, but the risks are just too high.

If a single duck is suspected of having Avian Flu, the agency mentioned above can order the culling of ALL birds in the flock as a precautionary measure. 

But why can't the ducks continue living in the current enclosure? Good question! The current setup is suitable for overnighting the flock, keeping them safe from weather and foxes, but it is simply too small for this many birds to live in around the clock, for months on end. 

High winds have also destroyed it on several occasions. If this happens in the middle of lockdown, the ducks will be exposed to the open air and possibly infected by overflying wild birds, attacked by land predators and exposed to the elements.
